"Persistency draws the horizon of things"


"Persistance" means "persistency". To make the experience of the world is to make the experience of its persistency. Persistency is an assumption of realism -we exclude any solipsism here- that leads us to the origins of things and their incessant up to date, like an ideal prototype of the peircean idea of secondeity. It seems that the musical figure of sustained sound is the sonic translation of persistency: no attacks, just the sound lasting. In order to be more accurate we'll use the french notion of "trame" (weft) described in M.Chion's synthesis of P.Schaeffer works: "type of sound [...] with an extended duration, created by layerings of extended sounds, wreath, mergers of sounds slowly evolving and heard as sets, macro-objetcs, slow progressions of slightly differentiated structures", (p134, "Le Guide des Objets Sonores", Michel Chion). From classical to electronic music, the wefts are a common musical figure, often relegated in the background of the music.


As an experimental acousmatic composer I found very interesting to work purely on wefts, so I planned to realize many studies: wefts for themselves, not like these background figures but as authentic musical pieces. The special temporality of these objects reveals psychoacoustic effects and forces us to dive in the sound matter. My aim was not to play static spectrums because I would work on internal variations, that's why I composed morphings of clusters. Even if these pieces respond closely to the definition of the weft found in Le "Guide des Objets Sonores", it would be of a semiotic interest to brush and play close to the outside borders.

These sounds have been composed with digital synthetizers on python module PYO and with tape machine. This work is also a microtonal exploration inside various uncommon sets, many collateral xenharmonic interactions are produced by the internal variations.

"Trame des Racines" is a FM based morphing of a set generated by the discrete square root. Polysemic weft.

"Trame du Vaisseau" is a FM based morphing of a set generated by powers of 49/40 which is the aritmethic mean between 5/4 and 6/5. An old spaceship fitted with a moribund engine.

"Trame de la Dissymétrie" is a FM based morphing of a set generated by 49/40. Time reversing with electromagnetic bits.

"Trame des Scies" is a morphing of a set generated by powers of 3/2. Digital blades and wood.

"Trame du Vortex" is a FM based morphing of a set generated by powers of 3/2. Spiral ghosts stretch the symbolic possibilities.
